Harley Skin and Laser has a wide range of medical-grade devices that enable us to deliver safe and effective treatments with clinically proven results for birthmark removal.

Birthmarks are simply a discolouration of the skin that can have a variety of causes including an unusual grouping of blood vessels or a localised excess of pigment which gives skin its colour. If a birthmark is causing you to have low self-esteem, then Laser and IPL treatments are an effective, non-invasive way of removing unwanted birthmarks.

Port wine stain (capillary malformation birthmarks)
Port wine stain birthmarks appear as wine-coloured patches on the skin. They are caused by abnormal blood vessels and can vary in size. They most commonly occur on the face, back and chest, but can appear anywhere on the body. Most port wine stain birthmarks are permanent and can become more prominent as the years go by.

Cafe-au-lait spots
Café-au-lait spots are pale, flat coffee-coloured patches of skin. Like most birthmarks, they are harmless, but if a child has more than six of these marks before they reach the age of five years old, it might be a symptom of a genetic condition called neurofibromatosis. Speak to your GP if you are concerned.

Our Step By Step Guide To Treatments

Step 1:
Consultation

During your initial consultation for Birthmark removal we will help to identify the most suitable treatment for you. Our friendly practitioners will discuss your medical history and explain how the treatment works fully, A consultation and test patch with a signed consent form is required prior
to starting treatment.

Step 2:
During Your Treatment

Treatment uses a specific light wave that is right for the specific colour and make-up of the birthmark. Over a course of treatments, the laser breaks down the colour so that the mark fades and blends in with the surrounding skin, without leaving any scars.

Step 3:
After The Treatment

Treatment is mildly uncomfortable and a warm, tingling sensation not unlike sunburn is experienced afterwards. The treated area may feel itchy but it is important not to scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Most types of birthmarks can be removed with laser treatments. The laser used depends upon the type and colour of the birthmark being removed. In some rare cases, it might be necessary to undergo surgery to remove a birthmark.

No, some types of birthmark fade and even completely disappear with age.

Only if it is affecting your health. If you want a birthmark removed for cosmetic reasons, you are unlikely to be able to do this on the NHS and will probably have to pay for it to be removed privately.

It’s still not clear why birthmarks occur, but they are not usually passed down genetically.
