Throughout life, we all deal with acne, whether this is in our teenage years or into adulthood, most acne goes away naturally leaving no scarring behind, although for some mild to severe acne scarring can occur and can become bothersome for years to come.

Usually occurring in most people due to hormones as a teenager, acne can be brought on genetically and even through lifestyle choices such as stress, diet or sleep. Acne scarring will occur after the acne has cleared and there is a loss of tissue, resulting in an indentation on the surface of the skin, this should naturally heal although may not fully disappear unless laser acne treatment is applied.

Acne can develop on the face, neck, chest, back and arms and can affect all ages of men and women. Acne can be effectively treated with Intense Pulsed Light alone or in combination with other clinical treatments

What Is Laser Acne Treatment & How Does It Work?

The light emitted from the Intense Pulsed Light System directly targets overactive sebaceous glands, greatly reducing the total number and severity of active lesions and lessening the inflammation and occurrence of breakouts.  The light stimulates the production of new collagen to improve skin texture and can also reduce the appearance of red or brown marks that are often associated with acne breakouts.

There are several benefits of using IPL acne treatments but none more so than in comparison to traditional acne treatments for teenagers, becoming ever more important than before is the fact that it avoids teens having to take antibiotic treatments and prescribed medicines that may have side effects that can be unpleasant.

What Can You Expect During Our Laser Acne Treatment

Step 1:
Consultation

Prior to any treatment here at Harley Skin & Laser Clinic, you must undergo a consultation with one of our experienced aesthetic practitioners. This discussion will allow us to discuss your medical history ensuring you are suitable for the laser acne treatment and no contradictions are found.

The required areas for the treatment will also be confirmed before any steps are taken with a treatment working best on uneven areas such as the neck, face, back or chest.

The starting price for the laser acne treatment is £75, pricing will be discussed with you through your consultation as we work with you to get you the best results.

Step 2:
During Your Treatment

The exact treatment needed will differ between people depending on the severity of your acne, with a typical laser acne treatment course taking between 4-8 sessions which last approximately 15 minutes each.

Taking place in one of our treatment rooms here in Newcastle-under-Lyme, your aesthetic practitioners will talk you through the treatment once more before beginning. The laser acne treatment is mildly uncomfortable but no anaesthesia is required, with many people describing the sensation as similar to being flicked by an elastic band.

Each treatment starts with a protective cooling gel being applied to the area about to be treated, this should help reduce any discomfort and keep the laser’s heat away from your skin while still allowing the IPL to flash through.

The IPL device is then pressed into the affected area and a flash of light is emitted into the skin. The acne laser treatment device is then moved around the treatment area, with a flash going off at designated treatment points. Each pulse of light treats a large area of skin and so the duration of treatment is very short.

Step 3:
After The Treatment

The treated area should experience few to no side effects at all once treatment is complete as the laser acne treatment causes minimal damage to the top layer of skin. The feeling of a slight sunburn that can last a few hours after the treatment will be felt by most patients along with the potential of slight bruising, redness or small blisters rarely appearing.

People who go through laser acne treatment should expect to see some improvements after their first session, however, full results won’t show until after the first few treatments are completed.

To help maximize recovery we advise using the Harley Skincare products such as ‘Reveal Cleanser’ and ‘Rejuvenate Serum’ on the treated area daily, ensuring it’s clean at all times and avoiding applying makeup when possible. If you’re heading out after the laser acne treatment is complete we always advise wearing Harley Skincare ‘Protect 50 SPF’ to avoid any sun damage as this can be very harmful to the skin.

The general rule is that the results of different acne treatments are different for different people, unfortunately, it is not a one-treatment fits-all issue that people face.

Although IPL Laser Acne Treatment is proven to have a high success rate we always advise avoiding the triggers of acne including stress, lack of sleep and an unhealthy diet.

Many treatments for active acne are out there and we have a few options here at Harley Skin & Laser Clinic, usually treated in three stages; products, peels and light. Or a selection of these depending on the person afflicted. More about our active acne treatments can be read on our acne treatments page.

Although alongside these products we would always recommend being aware of the genetic influence on active acne that unfortunately can not be prevented but can be slowed with attention being paid to your lifestyle in areas such as; stress, diet, sleep, contraception, pregnancies, menopause, and exercise.
